Joe Hart: The Celtic goalkeeper didn't have a save to make. He was quick out of his box at the start of the second period to deal with a speculative long ball forward while one backpass between him and Carl Starfelt was the only moment he might have had cause to sweat a little.

Josip Juranovic: A quality performance on the right from the Croatian. He produced one of the moments of the game only for his assist to be chopped off courtesy of a linesman’s flag for handball. The 26-year-old was a constant menace as he gave the United backline a torrid evening while never shirking his defensive duties.

Cameron Carter-Vickers: The central defender was involved in a penalty claim at the other side of the pitch from what he is used to on the cusp of the interval and then started the second period with an unconvincing clearance that led to a Marc McNulty chance. Otherwise, he was fairly solid and carried impressive work-rate. 7

Carl Starfelt: Starfelt was involved in an incident with McNulty that had the United support screaming for what would have been an unlikely penalty but was generally comfortable throughout and under little pressure as Celtic controlled the tie with assured efficiency. 7

Greg Taylor: A powerful shift from the Scotland international, who worked his socks off as he got up and down the left-flank. He even tried his luck with a decent effort that brought out a stop from Benjamin Siegrist after Celtic already had a foot in the semi-final.

Callum McGregor: The captain was penalised for an early foul but made his mark with the opening goal - a low, raking effort from the edge of the box for his fourth of the season. Helped along by a Nicky Clark deflection, it was nevertheless an attempt that looked on target from the moment it left his boot.

Reo Hatate: Hatate had one snapshot effort inside the box that Siegrist was equal to in the opening period and put in a power of work in the middle of the park. He was booked for a foul on Kieran Freeman that had the home support roaring their disapproval. With two feet appearing to be off the floor, the Japanese midfielder could well have found himself in deeper water. To no real surprise, he was replaced at the interval.

Matt O'Riley: Impressive and instrumental. The midfielder was key in the opening goal as his corner picked out James Forrest while he showcased his elegant first touch midway through the opening half as he linked up with the same player. That move came to nothing but still offered a glimpse of both the quality and attacking prowess he offers.

James Forrest: Played his part in the opener with a clever touch to pass the ball to McGregor in a move that seemed straight off the Lennoxtown training ground. The veteran showed his pace in glimpses as he displayed signs of getting back to full match fitness. He remains a player who oddly divides opinion among the support yet is still capable of unlocking defences.

Giorgos Giakoumakis: A real poacher’s instinct was reflected in the two goals he claimed. His finish after Siegrist’s howler and then again as Karamoko Dembele’s effort looked to be going wide showed a real striker’s scent. It seemed like a harsh call to deem his handball in the build-up to Daizen Maeda’s ‘goal’ as an infringement too.

Daizen Maeda: Deployed in a wide role as Jota sat the game out with a knock, Maeda raised a few eyebrows early doors as he swung in a looping effort from wide left that landed on the roof of the net. His pace gave United full-back Freeman problems all evening and it was his cross to set up Celtic’s second goal which killed the game off.

Substitutes

Tom Rogic: On at the break for Hatate, Rogic showed a rare moment of slackness when he overhit a pass from Giakoumakis as Celtic looked to hit United on the break.

Mikey Johnston: Given the last 15 minutes as part of a triple change as he replaced James Forrest.

Karamoko Dembele: The second youngest debutant in the club’s history books – Jack Aitchison takes that honour – will be content to have played a part in Celtic’s third of the night. His effort looked to be sliding past the post before Giakoumakis turned it in.  6

James McCarthy: Replaced O’Riley, who had put in an impressive midfield shift. 5

Yosuke Ideuchi: Given a three-minute run-out.
