Celtic began their 2022-23 pre-season schedule by demolishing SC Wiener Viktoria 7-0. Here are three of the main takeaways from the match...

Kenny shows up

In just 45 minutes Kenny scored twice, with the post denying him a hat-trick. He really couldn't have contributed much more.

The 19-year-old hasn’t played competitively for Celtic after signing for a reported £150,000 from Sligo Rovers in January but he showed Ange Postecoglou that he isn’t to be forgotten.

He was perhaps unlucky in the timing of his signing; had he joined the Hoops just six months earlier he almost certainly would have been given an outing or two during that barren period in late November and December in which the side was struggling with depth.

That period saw Owen Moffat and Joey Dawson make their debuts in the green and white. But if Kenny carries on the way he started against Wiener Viktoria, he will almost certainly get his chance for the first team in the upcoming season.

The Mikey Johnston question

Yes, this may cause some groans. Yes, it was against a side in Austria’s third tier. And, yes, he hasn’t given enough in his time so far to show that he could end up a starter at Celtic.

However, after Anthony Ralston’s monumental rise from the ashes last season, it is hard to write off any player from turning their Celtic career around.

After setting up the first goal nicely in Vienna, Johnston followed that up by netting the third. He showed good composure to coolly tuck away the Celts' third of the evening with a defender putting pressure on him.

He finished the half with a smart cutback to James Forrest to net the sixth. The Scotsman was substituted after just over an hour played and didn’t let himself down with his second-half performance either.

He has been around the first team for a while but, at just 23 years old, he still has time yet to bring his game to a new level and contribute to this all-out attacking Celtic side.

We never stop

It’s a phrase that has been repeated countless times in Postecoglou's tenure, and time and time again it rings true.

Netting six times in the first 45 speaks for itself but it must be said just how quick Celtic started off the mark. Almost every player looked lively and raring to go.

The Celts scored a whopping 78 goals last season, finishing the campaign with a 6-0 win over Motherwell. They started this one with seven.

Despite it coming against a team in Austria’s third division, there is something to be said with the high intensity from the get-go. It is a great start to Postecoglou’s season and more will still be to come in this pre-season as new players gel together with last year's champions.
