Cameron Carter-Vickers has admitted he thought he'd given away a penalty against Aberdeen.

The Celtic centre-back was at the heart of a late flashpoint with huge appeals for a spot-kick after a collision with Junior Hoilett in the box.

Carter-Vickers appeared to kick through the back of Hoilett as he looked to clear the ball, with the attacker going down after the contact.

Referee Don Robertson quickly whistled and signalled towards the box with confusion around the decision as Aberdeen fans celebrated and Celtic fans despaired.

However, despite even Carter-Vickers fearing the worst, Robertson had blown for an earlier foul on Alistair Johnston in the box.

A VAR check followed and the on-field decision remained with Celtic awarded a free kick in their own box and Carter-Vickers majorly relieved.

Asked if he thought he'd conceded a penalty, the US international said: "Yes, I did, to be honest. It probably was a foul.

"We didn’t get given the foul before but then we did. You obviously don’t want to concede late and then think it’s going to be penalties at that point.

"I was praying. I thought it was given but then when it wasn’t I was happy."

Then, detailing his discussion with ref Robertson as a VAR check was being carried out, Carter-Vickers said:"The ref just said it was a foul against Alistair Johnston. Then I saw VAR was checking it.

"I said to him ‘If you’ve seen it on the pitch then just stick to your decision, please'."
