ALLY MCCOIST has hit back at a claim that Rangers and Celtic are nothing more than "Scottish dross" from a loudmouth English pundit.
Former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy told talkSPORT last night that the Old Firm pair would do no more for the Premier League than Norwich currently do.
Rangers and Celtic entering England's top flight is an age-old debate that will likely rumble on until the end of time.
A caller on last night's Sports Bar show was keen to see a restructuring of the EPL - as he asked whether the Glasgow giants should be included.
Chuckling, Cundy responded: “Why do you want Scottish dross?"
He questioned what they would bring to the division, adding they would "just be the new Norwich".
However, on this morning's breakfast show Gers legend McCoist was quick to jump to the defence of the Old Firm, hitting back at Cundy's disrespectful claims.
Although, he did warn that it would take some time for both sides to become settled down south.
He said: "I just don’t see it happening. The intrigue and the interest would be there cause it would be fantastic.
"It would take four or five years before they established themselves but once they got on a financial footing with the rest of the teams in the country they’d be top six.
"This season? Lower half. Celtic would struggle at the moment from what I’ve seen at the moment.
"Rangers aren’t performing anything like they did last year. I’d say about 14th or 15th for Rangers. 16th for Celtic."
Host Laura Woods suggested he really thought Celtic would be relegated.
He responded: “Well…Do you know something? It’s very difficult to compare. It’s just not fair financially.
"In the top flight in England you get something like £70m when you get relegated and if you win the Scottish Premiership you get £3m.
"That would tell you how grossly unfair it is but when you get stadiums that hold 60k and you’re filling them with 50k season tickets, that would indicate to me that in a matter of time you’d be fine.
"But to be brutally honest, at this moment in time, both clubs aren’t playing like they are capable of."
