ALAN THOMPSON has claimed that Rangers deliberately signed El Hadji Diouf to wind up Celtic supporters.
The former Senegalese international switched to Ibrox in 2011 in a loan deal from Blackburn Rovers.
He would go on to make 22 appearances, scoring two goals, as Rangers won the SPL title and League Cup that season.
Diouf had history with Celtic after he was handed a two-match ban and fined two weeks’ wages after spitting at a Hoops supporters during a Uefa Cup clash in 2003.
On the former Rangers man, Thompson said: "Don't forget it was Lenny and me opposing him exactly eight years previously when Celtic played against Liverpool in the Uefa Cup match at Parkhead and he infamously spat at Celtic fans.
"You look at Diouf and he was pretty decent. The guy had been with some good clubs but in my opinion the only reason Rangers brought him in on loan was to wind the Celtic fans up.
"He was brought in by Rangers for the shock value."
