FORMER Celtic striker John Hartson has aimed a dig at Kris Boyd for the ex-Rangers player's comments about Parkhead skipper Callum McGregor.

The midfielder sustained a facial injury in his side's 2-1 win over Alloa in the Scottish Cup and made his return to the starting XI for last week's top-of-the-table clash against Rangers.

Ange Postecoglou's side strolled to a 3-0 win over their rivals and in the aftermath, Boyd suggested in a newspaper column that the Rangers players should have 'tested' McGregor's facemask.

Celtic then complained about the comments before McGregor revealed at a press conference earlier today that he has spoken to Boyd and considers the matter closed.

Appearing on Go Radio, Hartson said the comments were in 'bad taste' as he claimed Boyd wasn't exactly the most aggressive player in his heyday.

"I think Callum himself thought the comments were in bad taste and has now commented on it," Hartson said.

"He said that Kris Boyd has got in contact and as far as he is concerned it's finished, but you don't quite know if he meant a Rangers player should smash Callum McGregor in the face to test his mask.

"I think what he was trying to say was get near him, get close to Callum McGregor.

"But I don't know what Kris Boyd is doing saying that because he never laid a glove on anyone during his career.

"He never got close to anyone to do that.

"If he is insinuating that the players should have been more aggressive towards Callum McGregor, Callum thinks that is in bad taste, and I agree with him."
