St Johnstone have finally revealed why Celtic loanee Adam Montgomery was left out of the matchday squad for the game against Aberdeen at the weekend.

Montgomery, 20, joined the Perth side on a temporary basis during the summer and had featured in all seven of their opening competitive games, playing 90 minutes in six of them.

He was, however, conspicuous by his absence from the whole squad for the Saints' 1-0 home loss to Aberdeen at McDiarmid Park on Saturday.

Perth boss Callum Davidson did not reference the omission in his post-match broadcast commitments but appears to have done so while providing an injury update to local written press.

The Courier reports that Montgomery "had a tight thigh in the build-up to the Aberdeen game" and notes that he should be available for St Johnstone's trip to face Hearts on Sunday.

On his other injury updates, Davidson added that David Wotherspoon and Tony Gallacher are closing in on returns while striker Chris Kane is going under the knife and left-back Callum Booth is "still a fair bit away" meaning game-time for Montgomery is likely when he is fit again.
