Former Celtic defender Dedryck Boyata has sealed a move to Club Brugge after he was made surplus to requirements at Hertha Berlin.

The Belgian international was told he could leave during the summer transfer window after he was stripped of the captaincy.

The Bundesliga side's sporting director Fredi Bobic had previously made an appearance on Germany's famed Sunday footballing roundtable Doppelpass and commented on manager Sandro Schwarz's decision to drop their former captain Boyata from the squad, admitting that the club were looking to sell the 31-year-old.

"We don't have the feeling that he can help bring us forward at the moment," he said. "We either sell or he trains so outstandingly that we can't place anyone ahead of him."

The former Manchester City man enjoyed four years at the Hoops, which saw him win three consecutive trebles including the 2016-17 invincible season.

He left the Bhoys in 2019 on a free transfer and, after moving to Germany, quickly established himself in the Berlin team up until this season.

Boyata will now look to force his way into the team ahead of another former Celt in Jack Hendry, who also plays for the Belgian First Division A team but has fallen out of favour so far this term.

He has signed a permanent contract with the club, which runs until 2025.
