Former Celtic defender Jeremie Frimpong has been linked with a move to Premier League giants Manchester United.

This is according to Sky Sports Germany, who claim that "talks are planned about the right-back's future after the World Cup."

He is currently on the books of German side Bayer Leverkusen, having moved there from the Hoops in January 2021.

The Dutchman has scored five goals and provided three assists in 21 appearances for the Bundesliga club this season.

As well as this, he has also added Champions League experience to his CV, and performances have apparently caught the eye of Red Devils boss Erik Ten Haag.

Frimpong is currently in Qatar with Louis van Gaal's side as he looks to make his World Cup debut.

The Netherlands sit top of Group A with four points after two games.

And he is not the only ex-Celt competing at the international spectacle.

His fellow countryman and captain, Virgil Van Dijk, has also been in action for the national team.

One of the best defenders in the world, the former Parkhead centre-back has an extensive trophy haul at this point and he would no doubt love to add an international honour with his country to his collection.

In terms of individual performances, data from Wyscout shows he was extremely dominant in both of his two appearances so far - but in different ways.

Against Senegal he was strong from an attacking standpoint. He completed 89 per cent of his passes and was successful in two out of four long-range passes.

In the second fixture he had to be more defensively minded and as a result, he was successful in 71 per cent of his duels and only lost out on one aerial duel.

Meanwhile, Ange Postecoglou will have no doubt had an eye on Australia as they lost 4-1 to France in the opening game.

The starting XI for the Socceroos included Hoops academy graduate Jackson Irvine.

After a tough opening fixture, Graham Arnold's men rallied and have put themselves in second place after a 1-0 victory against Tunisia.

Irvine, who is currently on the books of St Pauli in Germany, has started both matches so far.
