League of Ireland side Dundalk have enquired about taking Celtic's Johnny Kenny on loan in January, according to reports.

Kenny is currently on a season-long deal at SPFL Championship club Queen's Park but has found game-time and goals hard to come by at the Spiders.

The 19-year-old, who joined Celtic on a five-year deal from hometown club Sligo Rovers last January, has started just two games for Owen Coyle's men with the bulk of his 310 minutes coming as a substitute.

He is yet to find the net for Queen's Park and the Irish Independent has reported Dundalk head coach Stephen O’Donnell has already approached Celtic about ending the youngster's Championship struggles and sending him to the League of Ireland ahead of the new season in mid-February.

The report claims Kenny's priority would be to stay in Scotland or England rather than move back to Ireland, where he broke through with 12 goals in 33 appearances at Sligo before sealing his move to Parkhead.

As well as Dundalk, who finished third in the division this year to earn Europa Conference League qualifying spot for 2023-24, Shamrock Rovers and Bohemians are understood to be interested in Kenny.

With the League of Ireland 2023 fixture list released earlier this week, Rovers begin their title defence with a trip to Kenny's former club Sligo on February 18. Dundalk, meanwhile, start with a home match against University College Dublin.

Kenny suffered a knee problem soon after arriving in Glasgow but scored a brace in the first-team's pre-season friendly opener against Austrian side SC Wiener Viktoria.
