Former Celtic winger Karamoko Dembele has not had the best start to his post-Hoops career.

The academy graduate made his debut during the last game of the 2018-19 season and was on the bench for that campaign's Scottish Cup final.

He never really kicked on from there though and played only twice the following year under Neil Lennon.

During the pandemic-stricken season, the winger once again struggled for game-time while an injury at the start of Ange Postecoglou's reign in charge of the club meant he featured little under the Australian.

The 19-year-old made 10 appearances in total for the first team during his time at the club before signing for French side Stade Brestois in the summer.

However, since joining the Ligue 1 team he is still yet to start a match and has only had 127 minutes of game-time in total with his new club remaining out of the relegation zone only on goal difference.

Speaking near the end of last season when he was quizzed on the winger's future, the Hoops boss said: "We've got some fantastic players who are missing out on the squad. Stephen Welsh has been outstanding for us this year and, unfortunately, we can't fit him into the squad at the moment because of the balance.

"That's how competitive it is so whether it's Karamoko or anyone else in this group, the only way of thinking they can go with is to just be ready. Train hard every day and be ready."

Ultimately the 19-year-old was unable to force himself into the team, outside of a substitute appearance against Dundee United in the Scottish Cup and a cameo against St Mirren in the league.

Not long after signing for his new club, Dembele spoke about his inability to break into the side under Postecoglou.

Speaking to outlet Ouest France, he said: "It's been very difficult for me. When you play so young, there is lots of pressure.

"It is what it is. I deal with it well. I enjoy my football so this does not matter. A lot of reasons I can not say, but I think the manager didn't really like the way I played or saw something that was missing in my game.

"But I am here to prove what I can do. I like the way Brest play and it is a good league. These are all the factors that came to me picking Brest.

"I like entertaining fans and having fun. I like to score goals and do all the things an attacker needs."

Brest return to action on Thursday when they face Rennes, a side Celtic played recently ahead of their own domestic resumption while away in the Algarve.

Thereafter a meeting with Moussa Dembele's Lyon lies in wait before they kick-start the new year away to Monaco.
