Former Celtic player Chris Sutton has reacted to the decision not to award the Scottish champions a penalty in the second half against Rangers.

The Glasgow rivals drew 2-2 at Ibrox after Kyogo Furuhashi's late strike meant the two clubs left the derby with a share of the spoils.

It is a result which means Ange Postecoglou's side remain nine points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

However, one decision in particular courted controversy in the fixture and that was the decision taken not give the Hoops a spot kick after Connor Goldson appeared to block Carl Starfelt's strike with his hand.

Referee John Beaton did not go for a second look at the monitor and instead chose to be advised by the VAR officials, of which Willie Collum was in charge.

The former striker took to social media to express his shock at the decision not going Postecoglou's side's way.

He tweeted: "Celtic got away with that. CCV [Cameron Carter-Vickers] was immense. Too many players way off it. [Aaron] Mooy excellent when he came on. [Josip] Juranovic would have struggled to impress any watching scouts… would Willie Collum in the VAR hut have awarded a penalty had a Celtic player handled the ball like Goldson?"

In the build-up to the game, Postecoglou had expressed hope that VAR wouldn't kill the atmosphere of a showdown beamed across the world.

“I am sure the authorities and officials are well aware of the magnitude of the game and the eyes that will be on the game,” he said.

“The last thing that we all want is to be standing around and watching an individual with his hand to his ear for too long. That is not what people around the world are going to be wanting to watch.

“If mistakes are made in terms of decisions I think we can deal with that, but ultimately what we want to see is a good game of football.”
