Celtic loanee Johnny Kenny was the star of the show in his first game for Shamrock Rovers.

The 19-year-old striker joined the League of Ireland side on loan at the start of the month following a disappointing spell with Queen's Park.

He showed no signs of low confidence by bagging a brace as Rovers defeated west Dublin side Lucan United 4-0 in their first pre-season friendly.

Kenny - one of only two players to start both halves as head coach Stephen Bradley made a host of changes - opened the scoring just after half-time and added his second near the end.

Upon signing Kenny on a temporary deal, Bradley insisted it was the conclusion of interest that spanned time prior to his Celtic arrival a year ago.

"We like his attributes and the way he plays the game," Bradley said. "We’ve liked him and monitored him for quite some time.

" We tried to get him a couple of years back and it didn’t quite come off so we’re delighted to get him, because he has some really good attributes that we feel will improve the team.

“We know what he’s about and we’ve seen it first-hand, so there are no surprises for us or for him. He knows the league and we know Johnny. In this team, with the chances we create and the way he plays, I think he’ll really enjoy it and score goals.”

Also on the scoresheet for Rovers was former Celtic academy graduate Richie Towell.

Dubliner Towell, now 31, spent more than five years with the Parkhead club and made one senior league appearance before embarking on a career that has included spells with Hibs, Dundalk, Brighton, Rotherham and Salford City.
