Celtic loanee Liam Scales was involved in an altercation with Rangers winger Ryan Kent during the weekend's League Cup semi-final at Hampden.

The 24-year-old defender - who joined Aberdeen for the season in the summer transfer window - has been a mainstay of the Dons rearguard and featured against the Ibrox side at the national stadium.

Jim Goodwin's Reds eventually lost 2-1 after extra time with Kemar Roofe netting the winner after Ryan Jack had levelled Bojan Miovski's opener.

Aberdeen captain Anthony Stewart saw red in the dying minutes of normal time, leaving the Granite City side down a man going into extra time.

A couple of minutes before the whistle sounded, however, there was a coming together between Scales and Rangers winger Kent with replays appearing to show the Ibrox man struck out.

The incident went unpunished in a match that also saw a breakdown in VAR communications and a consequent five-minute spell of no technology being in operation.

Goodwin addressed the Kent incident after the game, saying: "I don't think it's a major talking point. I saw the incident and I don't think there was a great deal in it.”

However former Celtic striker Chris Sutton viewed the flashpoint differently.

He tweeted: "VAR didn’t work as it should north or south of the border at the weekend. Ryan Kent will be very lucky to escape retrospective action for lashing out at Liam Scales though…"

Ibrox boss Michael Beale did not comment on the incident but did address the VAR breakdown.

He said: "We’ve only had it a short period of time so if VAR fails they should just continue with the game.

"There were a lot of breaks in the game which didn’t help either team. I thought the officials had a good game today."
