Canada international Alistair Johnston has netted his first goal for Celtic with a crucial header against St Mirren in Paisley.

The 24-year-old has impressed since joining the champions from MLS side Montreal Impact and was a standout in the recent League Cup final win over Rangers.

Johnston has followed that up with his first strike for the Hoops - and at a pivotal time.

The right-back headed home Aaron Mooy's free-kick cross to put Celtic 2-1 up against Stephen Robinson's side. You can watch the goal below:

Celtic were earlier at the centre of another controversial VAR call after Greg Taylor was penalised for handling the ball early in the first half.

Referee David Dickinson not stopping the play at the time of the incident but VAR Andrew Dallas indicated it needed to be looked at again with the penalty awarded after a significant period of time had elapsed.

Mark O'Hara converted the spot kick to give the Buddies the lead, becoming the first player since Lewis Ferguson of Aberdeen last season to score in three successive matches against Celtic.

Sky Sports pundit James McFadden was dubious as to whether the penalty should have been awarded in the first place, saying on commentary duty "I don't know where he can put his arm though?"

Likewise, studio pundit Andy Walker, when asked if he agreed with the penalty decision, said: “Absolutely not. A ridiculous decision and look at the position of the referee, David Dickinson. He's looking right at it. He's in a perfect position to see that and I think he calls it right.

“What do you want Greg Taylor to do with his body? What do you want him to do when he's, what, half a yard away? From that, I think it's a ridiculous decision to have that overturned.”
