Former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie has backed Brendan Rodgers for the Tottenham job.

The Northern Irishman was sacked by Leicester City earlier this month after over four years in charge of the Premier League Club.

He joined them from the Hoops in February 2019 and won go on to guide the Foxes to back-to-back fifth-place finishes in the league along with their first-ever FA Cup.

And McAvenie feels he is the perfect person to be the next Tottenham manager.

"I think Brendan Rodgers would be a great manager for them (Spurs),” he told Football Insider.

"That is his kind of team. He has got the players there and he would get them playing better.

"I do not know what happened at Leicester but Brendan is a good manager, a really good manager and he can get the best out of players.

"There is no way Leicester would have gone down. I think a club like Tottenham, Brendan would be a good manager.

"It is his stature, he is good enough to go there. He is one of the best coaches and I think they would take to him."

Meanwhile, Kieran Tierney has been urged to stay at Arsenal by Invincibles hero Lauren.

The former Gunners defender reckons the ex-Celtic star still has a future at the Emirates despite him struggling for a starting place this season.

Tierney has featured 30 times for Mikel Arteta's Premier League leaders, but the majority of his appearances have been as a substitute due to the form of starting left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko.

However, Lauren hopes the Scotland international stays put.

Speaking to Sporting Post, he said: "I don’t see why (Tierney)should go. If Arsenal don’t need the money, why would you sell him?

"He’s a very good player. We saw it against Spain in the recent international for Scotland and he played very well.

"He understands the ideas of Arteta now – rather than being in the wide areas, tucking inside and being like another midfield player, receiving the ball from the centre-backs and then starting the moves from there.

"You need everyone and you need Kieran to be in the squad. You never know from now, anything can happen with injuries and he needs to be focused and to play the way he is being asked by Arteta.

"For next year it depends on what he wants. If he wants to be in a team week-in, week-out then it’s his decision.

"But for Arsenal you need the bigger squad and they should keep him."
