Brendan Rodgers insists Celtic have "no need" to sell Matt O'Riley amid recent transfer speculation.

The midfielder has been linked with several sides during the January window, with LaLiga leaders Girona being the current team having a reported interest.

O'Riley has scored 10 goals and provided as many assists for the Scottish champions so far this season.

And Rodgers feels the Parkhead side are in a strong position to keep the midfielder.

He said: "The club is in a really strong position and we have no need to sell and no thoughts of selling.

"Naturally it is the time of the season where there is lots of speculation and gossip surrounding players.

"Matt is really, really happy here. He has signed a new deal and he has really progressed. He is into double figures with his goals and his assists are there.

"For him, as a young player, who I know is a brilliant professional, all he wants to do is improve and you can see his improvement here just by taking things day by day and assessing it from there."

Meanwhile, Celtic youngster Mackenzie Carse has joined Queen's Park on loan until the end of the season.

The 19-year-old has been a standout for the Parkhead B team, scoring seven times in 18 Lowland League appearances so far this campaign.

Carse has featured for Scotland at youth level, playing for the national team at U16s, U17s and U19s.

He joins Celtic team-mate Ben McPherson at the Championship side as Callum Davidson's men fight for survival in the division.

Speaking after the deal was confirmed, the Queen's Park head coach said: "In terms of building the squad this January a lot has been said about bringing in experience.

"We have done that with Sean Welsh and are still looking to add a couple of more players who fall into that category, however bringing Mackenzie in ensures that we keep the blend between high potential young players and experience right.

“He is a player that has shown in his displays for Celtic B this season that he is ready to compete for a first team jersey at a high level.

"He will get that opportunity to compete here and if he takes it the next opportunity for him will be to show that he can play at this level every week.”
