Lawrence Shankland could take “one last step” in his career and join Celtic this window, that’s according to Go Radio pundit Stephen McGinn.
The Hearts talisman has notched up 18 goals in 28 appearances in all competitions this season and has earned the attention of a host of clubs.
The 28-year-old has found a rich vein of form in his time at Tynecastle, and interest has ramped up in recent weeks from both sides of Glasgow.
With Shankland’s deal at Hearts not expiring until the end of next season, the Gorgie outfit could still command a hefty fee this window should he depart the club.
Shankland has been linked with a move to Ibrox for weeks with Phillipe Clement’s side looking the more likely destination for the league’s top goal scorer. However, Stephen McGinn believes Celtic should go in for the Hearts captain to bolster their attacking options.
He told Go Radio: “Kyogo rubber stamped his status as the main man in the recent Rangers game. But what they don’t probably have is when Oh comes on with about 20 minutes to go and you are chasing a result, he just doesn’t quite have that knack that Shankland has of nicking that goal.”
South Korean international Hyun-Gyu Oh has played backup to Kyogo since his arrival last January and has struggled to find consistent minutes leaving many question marks around him.
Oh has five goals in 19 appearances this season so far for the Parkhead side, so further goalscoring reinforcement may be a priority for Brendan Rodgers this window.
McGinn added: “And now he is a Scottish international, who has been linked with Celtic, so it’s probably that one last step for him in his career. That’s what everyone is looking for him to make.”
Hearts will be hoping to hold onto their main goalscoring threat until at least the summer to help secure the Edinburgh side third spot.
