Callum McGregor has brushed off Todd Cantwell's bold claim that he wants to win more than the Celtic captain.

Both players were involved in a scuffle at full-time in the last match between Celtic and Rangers.

And Cantwell broke his silence on the rammy last month claiming he possibly wanted to win more than McGregor - who has enjoyed a trophy-laden period at Celtic.

But McGregor shrugged off the bold suggestion from his midfield rival as he smirked: "If that's his opinion, then that's good for him."

Explaining the incident after the last match, Cantwell had said: "There is a rivalry there, right?

"Listen, there are things that are said on the pitch and things that are said off the pitch, which as a player I think you should respect.

"I want to win probably as much as he does - probably a little bit more to be honest because he has been up here a long time.

"It's a rivalry, it's a competition, both teams want to win, both teams need to win and for me it stops there, that's all it is."

It comes after McGregor threw down the gauntlet to Rangers in a "let's see what they've got" challenge.

On Celtic TV he said: "I love them [derby matches]. If you don't enjoy them then you're going to struggle to play at a big club like this. So over the years, you build up more experience and when the games come around then you know when you're in the middle of it, you have to enjoy it.

"You've got to enjoy the fight and the battle of it. Generally, when you do that, then you have positive experiences. So we'll definitely be trying to have another one of them.

"We've just got to stay calm and focus on doing our job. Sometimes you can become over emotional and you understand what the game means in the context of the season. But if we focus on our performance and working as hard as we possibly can for each other and the supporters, then you know straight away the energy level goes up.

"When we take the game to a level and intensity that teams struggle to live with, that's when we play our best football. So I think that the message for us is, focus on ourselves, work as hard as we possibly can for each and lets go and take the game to them and see what they've got."
