Celtic-linked goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo has been warned that a return to Exeter City would be a waste of time and to target earning an English Championship move.

The 22-year-old impressed on-loan with the League One outfit last season but has returned to Aston Villa, where his chances of displacing Emi Martinez as number one appear slim.

That's led to the Finland international, who has a year left on his current deal, being touted to replace Joe Hart at Celtic this summer.

If Brendan Rodgers' side were to pursue that option then his Exeter teammate, Shaun MacDonald, certainly approves - even if he believes club's in England's second tier should all be swirling around for Sinisalo's signature.

He told the Athletic: "He’s wasting his time coming back to League One next year. I’ve said that openly and he agrees.

"He’s got a year left on his contract, so he would probably have to sign a new deal if he was going on loan again. I would say move to the Championship.

"I saw stories about Celtic, so something like that would be great.”
