Former Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou is a shock contender to replace Gareth Southgate in the England hotseat. 

The Australian has emerged as a genuine candidate to fill the role vacated by Southgate yesterday.

The England boss resigned from his position just two days after England fell to a 2-1 defeat to Spain in the final of Euro 2024.

He oversaw eight years at the helm of the national team job, reaching two finals, a semi-final, and a quarter-final at major tournaments.

The job the FA now has is replacing Southgate, with that search already well underway.

Several contenders have already been touted, such as Eddie Howe, who is current Newcastle United boss, and Jurgen Klopp. 

The latter has already been ruled out, however, out-of-work Graham Potter is the favourite for the position.

Now, in a surprising revelation, The Telegraph claims that Postecoglou is also viewed as a series option by the FA.

He won the Scottish Premiership twice with Celtic, as well as a Scottish Cup, before heading south of the border for Tottenham Hotspur 12 months ago.

He guided Spurs to a fifth-placed finish in the Premier League last term, securing Europa League football this season.

The report claims that the FA has tracked Postecoglou from before his time at Celtic. He was Australia's national team head coach between 2013 and 2017, and it's that kind of experience that could see him approached.

Current U21 boss, Lee Carsley, is expected to be placed in interim charge until a permanent successor to Southgate is named.

Given Postecoglou has only been Spurs manager for one year, it remains to be seen whether a change of scene would appeal at this time or not.

Postecoglou is on Scottish soil tonight, as Spurs take on Hearts in a pre-season friendly at Tynecastle Park.
