Dundee midfielder Luke McCowan remains firmly on Celtic's radar.

The Celtic Way understands that the Scottish champions are still interested in the 26-year-old, but have not formalised a move in any way or lodged a bid with the Taysiders.

Scottish Premiership rivals Hibs have already had three offers rejected - one of which was believed to be £750,000 - for the attacking midfielder.

The Dens Park side is reputed to be holding out for £1 million for their prized asset who played an important role last season as Tony Docherty's newly-promoted Dundee managed a top-six finish as he bagged ten goals and five assists which garnered interest from Bolton and host of MLS clubs.

McCowan has hit the ground running this season with three goals and six assists in seven matches over all competitions. The player's current contract at Dens Park is set to expire next summer and earlier this week Dundee boss Docherty confirmed McCowan hadn't agreed to an extension despite having an offer on the table from the Dark Blues.

Speculation continues to mount as Celtic midfielder Matt O'Riley is on the brink of clinching a Scottish record transfer fee of over £25 million to English Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion. Last week Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers admitted that he would ideally want to bring in two new midfielders if O'Riley was sold before the August 30 deadline.

Rodgers said: "I still think we need another player in that position. If he (O'Riley) was to go, we'd need two more.

"I will need to speak to the board. There's a lot of work going on and there’s lots that we need to do."

The Irishman would then be in the market for a high-profile midfield player and £10 million-rated Augsburg defensive midfielder Arne Engels and Lausanne's Alvyn Sanches who would cost in the region of £4.5 million have both been linked with moves to Parkhead to replace O'Riley.

However, McCowan would also fit the bill perfectly as a midfield backup as he has proven Scottish Premiership experience and he would also enhance Celtic's homegrown quota in terms of Champions League league phase squad selections.
