It's been a month to remember for Arne Engels

The 20-year-old central midfielder earned a £11million move to Celtic just days before the summer transfer window slammed shut.

And what a game to make his Hoops debut as the Belgian came off the bench in the 3-0 Scottish Premiership thrashing of Rangers on September 1.

That result ensured Celtic went into the international break top of the league, with four wins from four games.

Engles was called up to his country's national team squad by manager Domenico Tedesco, which showed how highly he was rated after shining in the Bundesliga with Augsburg during the past two seasons.

Belgium got their UEFA Nations League Group A2 campaign up and running with a convincing 3-1 win over Israel.

Kevin De Bruyne's double plus a strike from Youri Tielemans cancelled out Timothy Castagne's first half own goal to seal an important three points.

Engels was given the final 16 minutes of the clash, which was played at Nagyerdei Stadion in Hungary due to security fears, emphasising the coaching staff's faith in the youngster.

That was his maiden senior cap and he will hope he can add to that tally over time.

He won’t unfortunately be able to achieve such when Belgium visit France on Monday because of suspension carried over from his time in the Under-21s.

Playing and training along side some of the world's best players will only benefit Engels, especially given the responsibility and expectation on his shoulders to help fill the void left by Matt O'Riley's recent transfer Celtic exit to Brighton.

“I am a player who can bring energy and will to win,” said Engels after receiving the news of his senior call-up last week.

“I am a real winner every day, even during mutual games in training. In addition, I have a nice passing and a good kicking technique, which can be useful in set pieces, if necessary. I am also very versatile: I pull my weight everywhere, but I prefer to play in midfield. I am mainly here to learn. I want to deliver quality and show that I am worth being here.”

Discussing his decision to include the Celtic starlet in his plans, Tedesco stated: “We have been following Arne for a long time. He was there in our training camp just before the European Championship and he impressed in training.

"He has enormous potential and we want to give him the opportunity to show what he can do. There is more room for younger players in the squad now. In the coming six months we have the chance to test these new faces.”
