Don’t Sleep At The Wheel’ was the message from the Celtic fans to the board, as they unfurled a banner at Celtic Park two years ago. That message most definitely fell on deaf ears as the board seem to be in a coma.
The playing squad is nowhere near adequate and the fact that our season is now underway with a threadbare group to choose from is absolutely staggering.
After a cataclysmic season last year, the club should be doing everything in their power to put things right and equip the manager with the players that he needs. We can already see the signs of Ange’s style and influence, but that only goes so far when he doesn’t have the personnel to execute his instructions most effectively.
It’s so tiring to constantly be saying the same thing, seeing the same issues and areas of concern, but with nothing actually being done about it.
If the rumours are to be believed, there’s a goalkeeper in Joe Hart just waiting to be snapped up, but here we are still persisting with two goalkeepers in Bain and Barkas who just currently aren’t cutting it. My question is why? If we can see that it’s such a serious issue, why hasn’t Dom McKay rectified it?

Barkas has my sympathy on a personal level, his confidence must be non-existent right now, and that’s something we can see all throughout the team. When they step out onto the pitch, they have to conquer a mental battle before a ball has even been kicked.
That confidence hit spreads through a squad like wildfire. The only way to rectify it is to start winning games. The only way I can see that we’ll start to win games is to bolster the areas that are needed.
Our lack of quality full-backs to choose from is seriously worrying, and also baffling, given that they play such a key role in the manager’s system.
We constantly hear of players that we’re linked with, but with no tangible action.
The fact that our season has started, and that we’ve already been punished for being so ill-prepared, is unacceptable.
Out of the Champions League, defeated in the league opener at Tynecastle, and teams are now smelling blood.
If the club doesn't act now and act with real intent, there’s no telling how far we could end up falling. This is a pivotal time in Celtic’s season and will set the tone for this year, and years to come.
We’re seeing the remnants of the wreckage left behind by Neil Lennon and the obliteration of standards in so many aspects. The rebuild is an immense task, not confined to the playing staff.
Ange Postecoglou commented this week about the need for fitness coaches and sports scientists. That had alarm bells ringing for me, I’d expect that from a League One side with limited resources, not a club that’s completely dominated Scottish football for a decade and been competing in Europe.
Two years on from the banner urging the board not to sleep at the wheel, the message is still unequivocally clear. Wake up.
