Ange Postecoglou handed new signing Tomoki Iwata his Celtic debut as a second-half substitute in the Scottish Cup fourth-round victory over Greenock Morton at Parkhead on Saturday afternoon. Here's how he got on...

His first involvement from his central midfield berth was a simple ball out wide but directly after that he showed he was perfectly willing to give his new team-mates some direction when he instructed centre-back Carl Starfelt's next pass.

The opening minutes of Iwata's Celtic career could adequately be summed up as 'on patrol'. Despite the four-goal advantage the Premiership champions enjoyed when he entered the fray he was most often found policing the centre circle in either half, including winning a header on the edge of the Ton penalty area.

That said, he occasionally popped up out on the right to help close down ex-Celtic youth Calvin Miller

The J1 League MVP was in the main decidedly unflustered - perhaps natural given the situation he was placed into for his first game.

Our scout report on the 25-year-old as his transfer neared suggested he would be a more mobile operator than the likes of Oliver Abildgaard or James McCarthy and thus allow captain Callum McGregor to either rest more or move forward to play as one of the two advanced midfielders.

This occasion it was the rest option and, on the basis that the second half of a one-sided cup tie in which possession reached upwards of 80 per cent, there isn't too much to be seriously drawn from a display.

To his credit, though, there were still plenty of crisp passes - albeit it seemed more going back the way than forward except a delightful cross-field raker in the 72nd minute - as well as lots of off-ball movement to show as a passing option (something Postecoglou absolutely insists on) and a willingness to help in defence and attack.

How to sum it up then? As easy a debut as you'll see. That noted aggression and mobility will be put to the test more in his next few games and then the verdicts can truly begin to form.
