"On to victory once more" read the impressive Celtic tifo at Hampden Park.

Five simple words. The Hoops duly kept up their end of the bargain by defeating Inverness Caledonian Thistle 3-1 at Hampden.

Goals from Kyogo Furuhashi - who bagged his 34th of the season- and both Liel Abada and Jota were enough to secure a 41st Scottish Cup success despite Daniel McKay's late strike making them sweat it over the line.

The three cup final scorers provided 62 goals between them season as Celtic penned a new chapter in their illustrious history and recorded their eighth domestic treble.

They now stand on their own now as no other club in world football has achieved this accolade.

Where's former BBC legendary sports broadcaster David Coleman when you really need him?

Coleman loved a world record. He also loved cup final day.

Ange Postecoglou has joined the pantheon of legendary bosses that landed the treble - Jock Stein, Martin O'Neill, Brendan Rodgers and Neil Lennon.

The Aussie became the fifth entrant on that roll of managerial honour. It meant the world to him.

He said: "There is a small bit of history in there now that stands forever and I could not be prouder of them.

"There is enormous pride that I am able to get my own bit of history. When you join this football club, it is a great opportunity but it carries great responsibility.

"There are certain levels of performance and success that you have to deliver and you have to take that on board.

"So to do something only a few have done and achieved is special. All the success I have had in my career is all special in its own way.

"This one I am extremely proud of."

However, it wasn't the procession that fans had envisaged.

In fact, in the lead-up, there had been real hyperbole that Celtic would set a record score in a Scottish Cup final.

That kind of talk did Billy Dodds' men a total disservice.

After 30 minutes, the names of John Barnes, Martin O'Neill and Ronny Deila were slowly but surely being mentioned under supporters' breaths.

In fairness, Super Caley didn't really look like going ballistic as they struggled to get out of their own half at times.

They mounted a brave rearguard action, with damage limitation being the order of the day for the Scottish Championship outfit.

Inverness' game plan was ripped asunder in the 38th minute with a goal of stunning quality.

Matt O'Riley claimed his 13th assist of the campaign as he swept the ball across goal from the right and Kyogo was on it in a flash to whip it into the top corner of the net.

It was a trademark goal from the striker. That was to be his last counter of the campaign as he made way for South Korean attacker Oh Hyeon-gyu on 58 minutes.

Celtic were on their way to victory once more. On 65 minutes when Callum McGregor fired one low across the face and second-half substitute Liel Abada pounced to poke home from close range.

It had the hallmark of Postecoglou's Celtic written all over it. A lethal two-pass exchange in the midfield before the ball ended up in the back of the net.

Game, set and match. An eighth treble was in the bag.

Cue the celebrations from the fans, who kept up a strident chorus all afternoon and were in fine voice.

They, more than anyone, had rolled up to the national stadium for a party.

However, McKay made it a nervy closing six minutes for the overwhelming favourites when he grabbed a goal for Inverness but the comeback was stunted after Jota rounded off the victory with a late finish.

In the midst of all the celebration, fans were left wondering whether this was Postecoglou's swansong as the Celtic manager.

Will the overtures from English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur prove too much to resist?

Ironically it was Postecoglou who channelled his inner Tommy Burns last weekend by quoting the Celtic legend during Scottish Premiership trophy day.

He said: "In the words of the immortal Tommy Burns, 'you are always there, always.'"

It was perhaps the words of another Burns that the Celtic supporters might well have been contemplating this time around.

The national bard himself - Robert.

If so was this the Aussie's version of: "Ae fond kiss, and then we sever; Ae fareweel, and then forever!"

From day one, the Celtic supporters embraced Postecoglou, they embraced his family and they even embraced his famous jumper.

Where does Postecoglou's future lie?  London or Glasgow? It's not a Question of Sport, as Coleman might have famously said.

And as the Celtic boss commented: "I will say to the supporters what I said to the players. Let's enjoy this. The people around me deserve to enjoy this.

"Whatever other people want to focus on and talk about. I am not going to miss enjoying this moment with this group of people - my family and friends - and those people closest to me who have made sacrifices.

"I understand other people who aren't invested in it want to ask these question but for me right now the most important thing is that we reflect and live in the moment of creating something special.

"The supporters deserve to enjoy this and irrespective of what happens in the future why would you not want to enjoy this. It is something historic.

"I anticipate enjoying this moment for the next 24 to 48 hours until somebody drags me away and takes my attention away from something that has been hard-earned.

"The reality of it is that there will probably be players in that dressing room who won't be here next year. That's the nature of football.

"I want them to enjoy it and I am going to enjoy it. That's all I am going to focus on until somebody grabs me by the collar and tells me I have to answer certain questions."

All it would have taken was just three words from the Aussie to put his adoring Celtic public out of their misery and help ease their temporary torment over the summer - "I'm not leaving!"

Sadly though, those simple terms that would've meant more to the faithful than anything didn't come.
