That's how you clinch a Scottish Premiership title!
'Piling on the agony and putting on the style' the Celtic fans sang as their heroes wrapped up their 54th title with a devastating 5-0 dismantling of Kilmarnock at Rugby Park. Brendan Rodgers' men blew Derek McInnes's side away to claim their third successive championship and 12th in the last 13 years. The visitors produced a season-best scintillating display in Ayrshire as first-half goals from Adam Idah, Daizen Maeda and James Forrest had Celtic 3-0 up and cruising at the interval and made sure that the away fans partied long into the night.
From the moment Idah tucked the ball away from close range inside the opening minutes lightning was never going to strike three times at Rugby Park. Maeda then stabbed home a second in 12 minutes - well the Japanese cult hero did take to social media on Tuesday to say Celtic would be crowned champions - and it was a procession from then on. Club legend Forrest then got in on the act as he helped himself to the third after 35 minutes and it was three and easy for Celtic.
Matt O'Riley slammed home a beauty into the top corner after 51 minutes, before scoring another not long after to complete the rout. This was arguably the best domestic display under Rodgers during both spells as Celtic manager.
It wasn't so much a victory, but more a statement of intent. If anybody connected with Rangers was watching then they have every reason to be afraid, very afraid ahead of the Scottish Cup final at Hampden Park on May 25th.
Brendan Rodgers said he would see the Celtic fans in May. He kept up his end of the bargain.
Rodgers stood on the steps of Celtic Park at his unveiling and proudly proclaimed: "So for those who are with me and always have been, let's enjoy the journey. For those whom I need to convince, I will see you here in May." It was billed as being over-confident bordering on arrogant. It was neither and nothing of the sort. They were the words of an elite-level operator and born winner. He is both of those things. If anybody needed to be convinced then they should all marvel at the tactical masterstroke and inspired decision by Rogers to play the Republic of Ireland international striker Idah from the start. What a call that was. It proved fruitful within two minutes. That's how elite-level operators work. The Celtic supporters even chanted the 'Brendan Rodgers' song during the interval. It is no more than the Northern Irishman deserved. He is class-personified. He was the club's biggest asset during the title run-in and told everybody who was prepared to listen that his men would prevail. Celtic wrote their own story. Rodgers will see his adoring public in May. He will have one big silver trophy to parade to them. Only a fool would bet against the 51-year-old landing the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup double.
Adam Idah has a knack for scoring big goals for Celtic but will it be enough to earn a permanent deal?
Killie were always going to be a robust opposition but Idah simply blew them away by being a real focal point in attack. That's eight career goals for Celtic so far. Every one of them has been vital to the Celtic cause in the title run-in. Kilmarnock simply had no answer to Idah's strength as well as his direct running and pace. He is deceptively quick for a big guy and at times he seemed to morph into the original Brazilian No. 9 striker Ronaldo. Rodgers loves Idah and it is not hard to see why. He ran amok and is a real throwback to a good old-fashioned centre-forward. It was his opening goal inside two minutes that clinched the title for Celtic as the champions never looked back after that moment. The opener was a thing of beauty as Idah started and finished a clinical move for the men in green and white. At this rate, it is the ultimate no-brainer for Celtic to ask the question of Norwich City. If they can pick him up for a fee somewhere in the region of £5 million then it could prove to be a shrewd bit of business. The striker kissed the badge after his goal and it is clear to see where his football heart lies. Based on this evidence alone, Idah could net a permanent deal. Watch this space and he may well have given Rodgers food for thought for his Scottish Cup final starting XI.
It's Matt O'Riley's world and we are all just existing in it
"Give him a ball and a yard of grass. He'll give you a move with a perfect pass. Give him a ball and a yard of space. He'll give you a move with godly grace." Indeed. These song lyrics were written for footballers like O'Riley. The dictionary is fast running out of superlatives to describe the Celtic midfield phenomenon that is O'Riley. Make no mistake he will leave this club for a Scottish record transfer fee. Celtic and the faithful just need to enjoy what time they have left to see O'Riley in the flesh. His assist to set up Idah for the opening goal was superb. It was his 13th assist of the season which is incredible numbers. Then O'Riley decided to leather a screamer into the top corner on 52 minutes to make it 4-0. It was his 17th goal of an amazing season. He wasn't finished there as he made it 5-0 on 71 minutes and took his tally to 18 in the process. O'Riley's football IQ, spatial awareness, vision, creativity and technique are a level above his peers in Scottish football. He is a ridiculously sublime footballer. He is the closest thing to poetry in motion on a football field. Despite all of this he was not deemed good enough to be the PFA Scotland Player of the Year. The Danish international most certainly has the football world at his feet and he could end up having his pick of clubs when he finally decides to upsticks and leaves Glasgow's east end. Are we watching O'Riley's last dances in the colours of Celtic? How much can Celtic sell him for is the next question? Oh, just one more thing regarding O'Riley. "He's a nice young man with a lovely smile". If you know, you know.
23 and counting for James Forrest..winners medals that is
James Forrest rolled back the years with another vintage display. He scored the third from close range but his contribution to the team since his return to the fold has been nothing less than stellar. That was Forrest's 23rd career winners medal for Celtic. He becomes the second most decorated player in Celtic club history and sits just one behind Lisbon Lion Bobby Lennox. Every Celtic supporter should salute one of their own and toast the evergreen Forrest. |Over 100 goals and over 100 assists and there is no sign of the 32-year-old stopping. Rodgers was right when he labelled him the best winger at the club. Steve Clarke has to include him in the Scotland Euro 2024 squad. He just has to. In the meantime Celtic and their supporters cannot get enough of Forrest. He is a true Celtic legend in every definition of the word. Take a bow James son, take a bow.
