Celtic have four points from their first three matches in this year's UEFA Champions League, sitting in 20th place of 36 teams. 

Brendan Rodgers and his players won their first league-phase encounter 5-1 against Slovan Bratislava, before losing 7-1 to Borussia Dortmund in Germany. Keen to put the latter behind them, they then held reigning UEFA Europa League champions Atalanta to a goalless draw in Italy.  

This year, European club football's flagship tournament has been re-formatted, replacing the traditional four-team group stages with a league phase that sees Celtic play eight games against eight different teams – four of those at Celtic Park, and four away from home.

Celtic started their UEFA Champions League journey for the 2024/25 season in style with a dominant 5-1 victory over Slovan Bratislava. Goals from Liam Scales, Daizen Maeda, Arne Engels, Kyogo Furuhashi and Adam Idah ensured Kevin Wimmer's strike was all but a consolation for the visitors.

Borussia Dortmund 7-1 Celtic

Despite dominating domestically ahead of the match - Celtic having won six out of six in the Scottish Premiership and yet to concede a single goal - Brendan Rodgers and his players were taught a lesson in football in Germany on Matchday Two. 

After conceding an early penalty, Daizen Maeda equalised two minutes later, however this was ultimately the only moment of reprieve the visitors were allowed - with Dortmund entering the break 5-1 up. 

With that, the second period moved at a slower pace, but the hosts still managed to extend their lead by a further two. A night to forget for Celtic as they now prepare for a trip to last season's Europa League winners, Atalanta.

Celtic put their Dortmund woes firmly behind them with a hard-fought but well-earned point against Serie A side Atalanta on Matchday Three. 

Brendan Rodgers' men were forced to defend with their backs to the wall for long stretches of the game, but saw out the stalemate against the reigning UEFA Europa League champions on their turf.

Champions League new format – how does it work and what is the new league phase?


This year's UEFA Champions League has a new format, marking the first time the competition structure has been changed since the European Cup changed to the UCL in 1992. 

Gone are the familiar group stages and in its place is a 36-team league phase, wherein each team plays eight different matches against eight different opponents.  

The top eight sides in the league will qualify automatically for the round of 16, while the teams finishing in 9th to 24th place will compete in a two-legged knock-out phase play-off to secure their place in the competition's knockout round. 

Teams that finish 25th or lower will be eliminated, with no access to the UEFA Europa League as was the case in previous years.
