VAR intervened after Matthias de Ligt was adjudged to have fouled Danny Ings in the box, with Jarrod Bowen scoring from the spot in stoppage time. It saw the Hammers run out 2-1 winners in what proved to be Erik ten Hag’s final game in charge of Manchester United.
When Celtic hero Chris Sutton said he felt it was the right call to award West Ham a penalty on BBC 606, he was told by a United fan: “If you can sit there and say that is a penalty, then you have been watching too much Scottish football.”
Sutton responded: “I was actually watching Celtic play Motherwell off the park.”
To which the fan answered: “Pub team, aren’t they, Motherwell?”
Sutton fired back: “Are they? I think that’s a little disrespectful. Imagine if Motherwell had £600 million to spend - do you think they would make such a mess of it like Manchester United have? I don’t think they would.”
