Celtic despatched a European heavyweight with a superb 3-1 Champions League win over RB Leipzig on an unforgettable glory night at Parkhead.

Brendan Rodgers's men came from 0-1 down to impressively defeat the Germans with a double from winger Nicolas Kuhn and a counter from Japanese midfielder Reo Hatate on Matchday Four.

The victory moved Celtic onto seven points from their first four matches as they emphatically downed Marco Rose's team who currently sit 2nd in the Bundesliga to give them a wonderful chance of advancing to the knockout phase.

It was the hosts who almost made a lightning-quick start and Arne Engels crashed in a drive that was blocked inside the opening 60 seconds.

RB Leipzig grew into the contest and the Germans took the lead on 23 minutes. A corner kick from the left was flicked on at the front post by Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers and Christoph Baumgartner nodded home from close range.

It was almost 2-0 moments later when Willi Orban glanced wide of the back post following another dangerous Kevin Kampl corner. Antonio Nusa was next to have a crack from the left of the box, but he sliced wide of the near post.

The Scottish champions got themselves back in it with a thing of beauty after 35 minutes.

Engels shunted a lovely ball into Kuhn who cut inside and curled a stunner of a shot past Peter Gulasci in the RB Leipzig goal to restore parity and make it nine goals and 11 assists for the season.

Kuhn then proceeded to produce the pass of the match when he released Daizen Maeda clear and he cracked it well over the crossbar. It was an assist that would have graced any team in Europe.

It was Celtic who turned the game on its head in first-half injury time. Greg Taylor pulled the ball across goal before Daizen Maeda's attempted effort helped it on to Kuhn who smashed it home as Celtic Park erupted in joy.

Kasper Schmeichel on his 38th birthday kept Celtic in the lead when he threw himself to the right to beat away Benjamin Sesko's drive.

Reo Hatate then forced the best out of Gulasci at the other end as Celtic chased a killer third goal. They duly got it when the outstanding Hatate fired high into the net after a mistake by Gulasci on 72 minutes.

On Bonfire night it was Celtic who served up the fireworks and made sure it was a special night as everybody inside Glasgow's east end will have cause to remember, remember this 5th of November.

King Kuhn does it again and what a season he is having

Former Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart nailed it completely in the TNT commentary box. Hart said: "Nicolas Kuhn is gliding across the park." Khun did glide. Everything Kuhn did he did with aplomb and he showed his former employers exactly what they were missing. It was Kuhn who lifted the hosts when they needed it most with a piece of individual brilliance. Kuhn drifted in from the right and floated the most audacious curler past Gulasci to make it 1-1. Celtic badly needed a lifeline in the game as RB Leipzig was threatening to take the game beyond Rodgers's men at that point. He was on hand as Celtic counter-pressed their way to a second goal in first-half injury time when he tapped home to make it 2-1 and the roof came off the amphitheatre in Glasgow's east end. He also produced a world-class defence-splitting pass that Daizen Maeda hammered over the top. Reputedly a whole host of English clubs are keeping tabs on Kuhn. Scrap that every big team in European football would be accused of not doing their due diligence if they were not looking at the German winger right now. Kuhn is the new King of Celtic Park. What a signing Kuhn is turning out to be. This was a top-drawer display by Kuhn at the highest level. A full German international cap will soon be in the offing at this rate.

Auston Trusty is the man to be trusted for the big occasion

The American has dislodged Liam Scales from the starting lineup and the Celtic supporters' collective hearts were in their mouths when he went down clutching his ankle after just seven minutes. The centre-back duly recovered from that injury scare. He was a colossus at the back for Celtic and seemed to get his head on the end of everything just as he did in Bergamo against Atalanta. He got his head on the end of a cross in the second half with a superb piece of defending. There is a quality partnership developing with the USMNT duo and it is no mean feat that Trusty has come in and taken the jersey off Scales who up until recently has been Celtic's best defender. Trusty though is beginning to not only look the part but he is playing the part.

Arne Engels is now settling into his role in the Celtic team

The Belgian is beginning to show increasing signs of settling in at Celtic and showing his worth to the team. He is an absolute powerhouse as well as an athlete. He possesses wonderful ability on the ball at times. What an assist he produced for Kuhn's equalising goal. It was a nonchalant flick of the boot that released the German winger to cut inside and make it 1-1. It was Engels who almost got Celtic off to a dream start when he hammered in a shot that was blocked by the knee of an RB Leipzig defender. He was caught on the wrong side of Baumgartner for the goal that saw the Germans take the lead as he had his back to the play as well but Carter-Vickers could and should have probably dealt with the bread-and-butter ball into the box better. Rodgers has 'gone to work' on Engels and like Kuhn, you will notice a world of a difference in six months. Engels is getting there slowly but surely and he made way for Portuguese midfielder Paulo Bernardo after 68 minutes but he can be satisfied enough with another decent display.

Reo Hatate is back to his best

The Japanese midfielder is back to his genius best and then some. The playmaker displayed some excellent touches on an evening when to a man Celtic were sensational. Hatate was outstanding and it was fitting that he got the clinching goal on 72 minutes as he fired high into the net following an uncharacteristic mistake by Gulasci. It was Hatate's high press that forced the issue for Kuhn's second goal on the stroke of half-time. The Celtic fans have always known that Hatate is a baller and he showed why he is every inch a Champions League-level player. He is such a dangerous footballer when he tries things which granted don't always come off but that is the beauty of him. Thankfully for Celtic and Rodgers, Hatate seems to have rediscovered his zest for life and has got his football mojo back. He is in love with football again and the Celtic supporters are in love with him.

Celtic's counter-press was the key to success as well as their game management

It was Rodgers who told his side in the lead-up to the game that their counter-pressing had to be on point and they had to bring their A-game to the table. The Irishman said: "We'll also need that little bit of patience as well because there's going to be moments whenever you, at times, supporters will want you to go forward and want you to press, but we have to be educated in our pressure and for that, that means making sure that everyone is in tune with that because you can't sustain it. You can't continue to do it against the very, very top teams." He was right. Celtic produced a display of outstanding football against the 2nd team in the Bundesliga. The players looked so in tune with each other and they resembled a band of brothers on the pitch at times. They were intelligent and smart after the break and deserved to claim the scalp of a European heavyweight as their ball retention was second to none and their game management was fantastic. This was as good as it gets for Celtic at the elite club level. Rodgers's Celtic are learning, progressing and developing on the European stage. They are going places.
