The season following Celtic's historic league-winning campaign of 1997/98 was mostly forgettable.

Not only did the Hoops fail to retain the title after so long without one, their city rivals bounced back from missing out on 10-in-a-row the previous year with a domestic treble.

Still, one glowing beacon of light in an otherwise bleak campaign came during the second Glasgow derby of the 1998/99 trail.

After holding one another to a finely-balanced 0-0 draw at Ibrox two months prior, Celtic hosted Rangers at Parkhead on September 21, 1998.

Wim Jansen had departed as manager after one successful league-winning campaign that summer, with Jozef Vengloš taking up the mantle in the Dutchman's stead.

Vengloš would likewise only stick around Glasgow for one single season – but on September 21 just over a quarter of a century ago, he managed a Celtic side who hammered Rangers 5-1 in Glasgow's east end.

In front of 60,000 supporters in the newly-completed Celtic Park, new Bhoy Lubo Moravcik hit a brace, as did Henrik Larsson, with Mark Burchill rounding out the scoreline on the day.

At the time, victories over Rangers were hardly commonplace, so the significance of winning by such a margin could not be overstated at the time.

This was, of course, just less than two years before Martin O'Neill's era and indeed the 6-2 game, the Irishman's first experience of the fixture.

Vengloš left Glasgow at the end of the 1998/99 campaign for a role as a European technical adviser, and scout for Celtic. On 26 January 2021, the Slovakian passed away at the age of 84.
