Ayr United have made their move to land Celtic hero Scott Brown as their new manager, according to a report.

The Daily Mail writes that the Championship has made an audacious attempt to convince the former Scotland captain to take over the hotseat at Somerset Park.

It was revealed today that Broony was the bookies' favourite for the gig vacated by Lee Bullen last week.

Brown, 38, has been out of work since he was sacked by Fleetwood Town in early September last year. He spent a little over a year in his first job as head coach of the League One outfit.

Since then, the ex-Hoops midfielder has carried out punditry work for various broadcasters while waiting on the right offer to return to the game.

Ayr are in a relegation fight to stay in Scotland's second tier. The Honest Men currently sits ninth in the table on 20 points, just two above bottom-placed Arbroath. On the flip side, fifth-placed Morton are only six points ahead.

They defeated Kelty Hearts 3-0 on Saturday under the stewardship of interim Davie White. This set up a fifth-round clash at Ibrox against Rangers in February.

On the prospect of landing a new job, Brown said earlier this month: "I would go anywhere. There are no ifs and buts, I would go and speak with anyone. I haven’t that ego of feeling too good for anything when I have been in League One and have been sacked at that level. I’m willing to listen to anything and will speak to anyone. I am trying to get back in.

"I've had some time off and I have been around a few clubs. I went to West Ham, Spurs and a few other clubs as well. I’m just trying to learn as much as I can. I’ll apply for a few jobs and see what is out there.

"I really enjoyed my experience at Fleetwood. I enjoyed going down, I enjoyed having an understanding of ‘this is our team, this is how we play’. We played two shapes, the lads had an understanding of how we did that and as the season went on we got stronger and stronger.

"We started the next season quite slow, had a few injuries, but we still knew where we were going. It was just one of those things as those in charge wanted to take the club in a different direction. Fair play to them, they have to do their job, I had to do my job, and we parted company with no grudges held, for once.

"My hope is someone wants a youngish manager that wants to play the way we can but also win games as well."
