Celtic salvaged a priceless Champions League league phase point courtesy of a magical moment from Japanese winger Daizen Maeda after a 1-1 draw against Club Brugge at Parkhead.

Maeda struck the equaliser after the hour mark after a disastrous own goal by Cameron Carter-Vickers on 26 minutes had put the visitors in the driving seat.

It was the Belgian champions who settled into the contest quicker than the visitors and they had the beating of the men in green and white in the opening 45 minutes.

Firstly Brugge sounded out a warning to Celtic when Japanese midfielder Reo Hatate needlessly gave up cheap possession and Ferran Jutgla let fly from the edge of the box but it curled just wide of the target.

The Scots couldn't get to grips with Brugge's high press or shape and it was no surprise when the visitors took the lead after 26 minutes but the way it came about was fortuitous and comical.

Brugge's high press put Nicolas Kuhn under pressure as he shunted the ball back to Celtic centre-back Cameron Carter-Vickers who played a blind pass back to goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel but could only watch in horror as it trickled into an empty net as the Dane had vacated his goal. Ironically Brugge had gone 1-0 up without having a shot on target.

That setback seemed to spur Celtic on temporarily and Kyogo couldn't get any purchase on Kuhn's lofted pass and then compatriot Hatate failed to make a proper connection with a header and Simon Migonlet easily gathered.

Celtic deservedly trailed at the interval and it could have got worse minutes after the break when Maxim de Cuyper saw his snapshot brilliantly turned round the upright by Schmeichel.

The roof was lifted off the stadium when Daizen Maeda produced a moment of individual magic when he curled home a beauty to restore parity on the hour. The Japanese winger was fed by Alex Valle and he chopped in from the left and curled in a stunning finish to make it 1-1.

Brugge striker Jutgla then squeezed a finish past Schmeichel on 69 minutes but Celtic got away with one as VAR ruled it for a marginal offside.

Bernardo dragged a shot inches wide as Celtic looked for a winner in the closing stages.

Sadly Brendan Rodgers's men couldn't make the breakthrough but the Scottish champions stretched their unbeaten Champions League run at home to five matches and moved onto eight points after five games to keep their hopes of clinching a play-off spot alive and kicking.

A defensive disaster for Cameron Carter-Vickers

What a calamity for Carter-Vickers as he needlessly gifted the Belgians the opening goal. The centre-back inexplicably passed the ball straight into his own net. It was a careless and uncharacteristic bit of play from the American who was looking for his goalkeeper but played it blindly back completely unaware that Schmeichel had vacated his goal. He simply chose the wrong option. However, there is an argument that the communication could have been better between all parties. It was a terrible mistake but it was no more than Club Brugge deserved in a dominant first half and handed them the initiative before the break.

Kasper Schmeichel produces another top-drawer performance and shows his leadership qualities

The Great Dane called a quickfire meeting after the concession of the opening goal and it was he who summoned captain Callum McGregor as the shot-stopper got the players in a huddle and rallied the troops. At the start of the second half, Brugge cut a swathe through Celtic from front to back with a series of one and two-touch passing, before Maxim de Cuyper forced Schmeichel into a wonderful dining stop as when he flung himself to his left to palm his effort round the post. The 38-year-old has proved his worth time and time again in the five Champions League matches already this season.

Arne Engels fails to impress against his former club

The £11 million man is struggling to reproduce his early sparkling form. It was a big night for the Belgian international but he failed to deliver. He left Callum McGregor very isolated in the midfield at times and did a lot of chasing shadows as Brugge exploited his weaknesses in the engine room. Engels is young and still adapting to the way of life as a Celtic player having joined a massive club. In truth, he was anonymous for large spells of this contest which in the unforgiving environment of elite Champions League level football will be seized upon. It was no surprise when he didn't even reach the hour mark before Rodgers decided he'd seen enough and replaced him with Portuguese under-21 captain Paulo Bernardo.

Duracell Daizen Maeda drags Celtic back into the contest

What a Daizen Maeda moment. It was always going to be Maeda or Kuhn who were going to throw Celtic a lifeline in the match. The Japanese winger provided a spark for his team when they needed it most when he curled home a sensational equaliser to make it 1-1. He turned his marker after linking up with substitute Alex Valle and it looked as if he was falling but he somehow managed to wrap his foot around the ball and beat Mignolet with a terrific swerving effort. What an engine the wide-man possesses. He appeared from nowhere to dispossess his opponents numerous times and it was his third Champions League goal of the campaign. It was another sacrificial performance from Maeda and he earned his standing ovation when he left the field on 76 minutes.
